“Study Links Air Pollution to Cognitive Decline”

Must read

Avoiding prolonged exposure to air pollution not only safeguards your respiratory system but also plays a crucial role in protecting your cognitive functions, according to a recent study led by a McMaster University professor.

Russell de Souza, a faculty member in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact at McMaster University, emphasized the impact of extended exposure to two common air pollutants on brain health. The study, published in the journal “Stroke,” analyzed approximately 7,000 Canadian participants recruited between 2014 and 2018 across different provinces.

The research focused on the effects of fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide, both prevalent air pollutants with sources ranging from wildfire smoke to vehicle emissions, on cognitive abilities. Using cognitive assessment tests, researchers observed lower scores in participants exposed to these pollutants, indicating potential early declines in brain function.

Although the declines were subtle and not immediately noticeable in daily life, de Souza highlighted the importance of early detection to prevent further deterioration. Despite Canada’s overall success in maintaining clean air quality, recent environmental factors like climate-induced wildfires have posed challenges to sustaining these achievements.

De Souza recommended monitoring air quality near high-traffic areas such as airports and highways and suggested checking daily advisories for localized pollution risks. Health Canada advised indoor measures to reduce exposure to fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide, emphasizing ventilation and proper appliance usage.

The study, part of the Canadian Alliance for Healthy Hearts and Minds, received funding from various health organizations. Future research aims to explore the long-term effects of air pollution on cognitive decline and the potential benefits of air quality improvements in preserving brain health.
