A tragic incident occurred in midtown Toronto on Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of a woman who was struck by two vehicles. The woman, initially reported to be around 80 years old but later confirmed as a 70-year-old, was crossing Eglinton Avenue E. near Dunfield Avenue after shopping for groceries, according to Deputy Inspector Scott Bradbury of the Toronto Police Service (TPS).
The woman was hit by two different vehicles traveling in opposite directions on Eglinton Avenue E. just before 7:20 a.m. Both vehicles fled the scene, and despite efforts by paramedics, the woman succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, a 48-year-old man from Toronto turned himself in and has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and leaving the scene of an accident causing death. The man was driving a white Hyundai Venue at the time of the collision. Police are still searching for a second unidentified suspect who was driving the other vehicle involved.
Eglinton Avenue E. was temporarily closed between Yonge Street and Lillian Street but has since reopened. Authorities urge anyone with information or footage related to the incident to come forward.
Councilor Josh Matlow expressed shock and concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for improved road safety measures in the area. Residents have echoed these sentiments, with Romahlio Williams and Diego Maytorena expressing sadness and disbelief over the hit-and-run nature of the tragedy.
Inspector Bradbury urged anyone responsible for the collision to come forward and cooperate with the authorities. The community mourns the loss of the woman and hopes for justice in the wake of this New Year’s Eve tragedy.
