Through a post on social media, the anonymous artist claimed responsibility for a striking statue portraying a man in a suit walking off a pedestal with a flag obscuring his face. A video shared on Instagram captured the overnight installation of the piece, which now stands amidst British war memorials at Waterloo Place in St. James’s.
The statue garnered immediate attention upon its sudden appearance on Wednesday due to its imposing size and unexpected presence. Banksy’s distinctive style, characterized by bold stencils and vibrant paint, can be found in urban landscapes worldwide, often conveying potent political messages. Many of his creations have sparked debates, faced removal, or been defaced.
Notable works like “Girl with Balloon” from 2002, depicting a young girl reaching for a heart-shaped balloon, and “Love is in the Air (Flower Thrower)” from 2003, featuring a masked protester hurling a bouquet of flowers, delve into themes of peace, love, conflict, and defiance.
Philadelphia-based artist and writer RJ Rushmore interprets the statue as a critique of blind patriotism. He praises the audacity of the piece and draws parallels to Banksy’s earlier works, such as the 2003 piece titled “People Who Enjoy Waving Flags Don’t Deserve to Have One,” which warns against the perils of extreme nationalism.

Visitors, like 23-year-old student Ollie Isaac, find Banksy’s art both impactful and approachable. Isaac believes that artists like Banksy can inspire positive change by conveying messages that promote hope over hatred and fear, potentially leading the way to a more optimistic future.
