Could Day 9 mark Canada’s long-anticipated first gold medal at the Milano-Cortina Games? Moguls skiing legend Mikaël Kingsbury is the top contender to achieve this feat in his final Olympic appearance, with other Canadian athletes eyeing podium finishes on the slopes.
Our daily viewing guide begins with the medal prospects, followed by a preview of Sunday’s key events, including the Canadian men’s hockey team’s last group-stage match.
Canada’s Medal Prospects on Sunday
Here are the events to watch, in chronological order:
Freestyle skiing: Mikaël Kingsbury in the men’s dual moguls at 4:30 a.m. ET
After narrowly missing out on a second Olympic gold in the traditional moguls event, Kingsbury is determined to secure victory in the dual moguls, a new Olympic addition. This format involves two skiers racing side by side, with the higher scorer progressing to the next round.
Kingsbury, a five-time dual moguls world champion, faces tough competition from Japanese skier Ikuma Horishima. The dual moguls competition kicks off at 4:30 a.m. ET, culminating in the gold medal round at 5:48 a.m. ET.
Julien Viel, another Canadian contender, aims to challenge for a medal following his sixth-place finish in the traditional moguls event.
In the women’s dual moguls, Maïa Schwinghammer’s campaign ended in the second round after placing fifth in the traditional moguls. Meanwhile, Megan Oldham and Naomi Urness advanced in women’s big air qualifying.
Alpine skiing: Val Grenier in the women’s giant slalom (final run at 7:30 a.m. ET)
Grenier, a consistent performer in the World Cup giant slalom events, seeks to add an Olympic medal to her collection. The competition features top contenders like Julia Scheib, Sara Hector, Federica Brignone, and Mikaela Shiffrin.
The giant slalom comprises two runs, with the first run commencing at 4 a.m. ET.
Snowboard cross: Éliot Grondin and Audrey McManiman in the mixed team event at 7:45 a.m. ET
Grondin, a silver medallist in the men’s event, teams up with Audrey McManiman for the mixed team challenge. The absence of Mereyta O’Dine due to injury alters the Canadian lineup for this event.
