Karl Arps, an EMT instructor, experienced a heart attack while demonstrating the symptoms during a training session at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, Wisconsin. One of the students, Logan Lehrer, a firefighter training as an EMT, vividly recalls the moment he realized Arps was in distress. Lehrer quickly recognized the seriousness of the situation as Arps showed signs of cardiac arrest. The students, under the guidance of another instructor, Traci Blondeau, efficiently administered CPR and utilized a defibrillator until emergency responders arrived.
The timely intervention by the students and staff, along with the professional response from first responders, played a crucial role in Arps’s positive outcome. According to Nick Romenesko, executive director of Gold Cross Ambulance, immediate recognition of the cardiac arrest and prompt actions significantly contributed to Arps’s survival.
Arps, who underwent triple-bypass surgery, expressed his astonishment at surviving the ordeal. Despite his recovery process, he is eager to return to work and has visited his students to express his gratitude. Lehrer emphasized the importance of remaining composed in emergency situations, while Arps acknowledged the students’ attentiveness and quick action, reaffirming the impact of effective teaching.
