“Gun Found in Cell: RCMP Probes Security Breach”

Must read

Police in Thompson, Manitoba, are investigating a security breach after a youth managed to sneak a gun into a cell at the local RCMP detachment despite an initial search missing the weapon. The incident occurred on December 14, 2024, and the gun was discovered by cleaning staff hidden behind a toilet in the cell two days later while the youth was being transferred to court. Subsequently, ammunition was found in the toilet bowl.

Supt. Chris Massart, the north district commander of Manitoba RCMP, acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing the potential danger posed by the security lapse. The youth had been arrested on weapons-related charges following an assault with a machete and faced additional firearms offenses.

The RCMP promptly reported the incident to management at both the detachment and the district, leading to an immediate review that involved analyzing video footage, conducting interviews with staff, and examining police records. The review revealed that the initial search of the youth was insufficient, leading to the failure to locate the firearm.

Following the security breach, the RCMP implemented recommendations from a comprehensive administrative review to prevent similar incidents in the future. One of the key measures included mandating that all officers at the Thompson RCMP undergo regular reviews of prisoner care and handling policies.

Although the RCMP did not disclose whether disciplinary action was taken against the officer responsible for the search, they stated that operational guidance was provided, and a performance review was conducted. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of both law enforcement personnel and individuals in custody.
