Environmental journalist Tatiana Schlossberg, a granddaughter of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, has passed away at the age of 35. Schlossberg, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, publicly shared her terminal cancer diagnosis in a November 2025 article in The New Yorker. The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation announced her death in a statement on social media, expressing their grief and stating that Tatiana will always hold a special place in their hearts. The cause and location of her passing were not disclosed.
In May 2024, at 34 years old, Schlossberg was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia after her doctor noticed elevated white blood cell counts following the birth of her second child. The leukemia, with a rare mutation typically found in older individuals, led her to undergo rounds of chemotherapy, two stem cell transplants, and participation in clinical trials. In her essay titled “A Battle With My Blood,” she recounted her medical journey, including the sobering prognosis given by her doctor during the latest trial.
Schlossberg also used her platform to criticize certain health policies advocated by her mother’s cousin, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., in her essay. She highlighted concerns about potential negative impacts on cancer patients like herself due to these policies, prompting her mother’s efforts to persuade senators to reject his confirmation.
Before her passing, Schlossberg had been an accomplished reporter covering climate change and environmental issues for the New York Times. Her book “Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don’t Know You Have” received the Rachel Carson environment book award from the Society of Environmental Journalists in 2020. In her poignant reflections, she expressed fears about her children not remembering her and lamented the life she would not get to continue living with her husband, George Moran.
Despite her family’s efforts to shield their pain from her, Schlossberg acknowledged feeling their sorrow daily. The Kennedy family has faced tragic losses over the years, including the assassinations of her grandfather, John F. Kennedy, and her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy, as well as the fatal plane crash involving her uncle John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1999.
