U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his contemplation of scrapping a series of concerts marking the nation’s 250th anniversary following several artists pulling out. Instead, he hinted at delivering a speech. Trump took to Truth Social to mention the possibility of presenting a speech and holding a rally, boasting himself as the top attraction globally, drawing larger crowds than Elvis Presley did at his peak, without a guitar.
The departure of Bret Michaels, the lead vocalist of the rock band Poison, marked the fifth artist to withdraw from the Freedom 250 concerts set to take place from June 25 to July 10 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The event, as described on its website, aims to celebrate “the Triumph of the American Spirit.” However, criticism has arisen regarding other activities linked to the U.S. birthday festivities, including attempts to feature Trump’s image on coins, his signature on bills, and his face on a special passport.
Among the artists who have also backed out from the anniversary celebration are country singer Martina McBride and the funk and soul band, the Commodores. The development raises questions about the nature and focus of the 250th anniversary commemorations and their alignment with Trump’s involvement.
