Flotillas originating from islands on opposite sides of the Canada-U.S. border are set to convene halfway today in a show of camaraderie between the two nations during a period of political strain. An estimated group of 100 boats will depart from Orcas Island, one of the San Juan islands in Washington state, located approximately 60 kilometers south of Vancouver, B.C. Simultaneously, another contingent will sail south from Salt Spring Island, with the intention of meeting near the international border.
This event, known as Hands Across the Water, marks its debut as a gathering celebrating the islander spirit and the lively essence of the late season. The idea for Hands Across the Water emerged during a discussion between Lyle MacWilliam, a former MLA and author, and his friends on Orcas Island, where concerns about the state of relations between Canada and the U.S. were raised.
The brainchild behind the initiative was Ross Newport, a resident of Orcas Island, who was moved by the sentiment of local residents feeling disheartened by the treatment of Canada. The concept of organizing a flotilla to foster connections between Orcas Island and Canada gained traction swiftly.
Justin Paulsen, a council member representing Orcas Island, promptly embraced the notion of Hands Across the Water as a means of reinforcing the enduring historical ties between Orcas Island and Salt Spring Island.
The event serves as a poignant reminder that despite the existing border, Orcas Island and Salt Spring Island have shared a longstanding relationship that predates the territorial divisions. The islands confront common challenges relating to housing and climate change, making it imperative to facilitate cross-border interactions for mutual benefit.
In addition to its cultural significance, the event holds economic potential for Salt Spring Island, especially with activities planned over the weekend on the Canadian side. Safety measures have been coordinated with the Canadian and U.S. coast guards, with the Canadian Coast Guard ensuring the safety of the local flotilla during the event.
The scheduled rendezvous point for the flotillas is Welbury Bay for a symbolic handshake on September 19th at 3:30 p.m. PT, followed by an opening ceremony in Salt Spring Island’s Centennial Park at 5:30 p.m.
