Conservative Member of Parliament Jamil Jivani has expressed his willingness to assist in restarting trade discussions with the United States if Prime Minister Mark Carney seeks his help. Jivani, representing Bowmanville-Oshawa North, is a close acquaintance and former Yale Law School classmate of U.S. Vice-President JD Vance. Despite limited recent communication, primarily centered on their fantasy football team, Jivani believes that the appointment of a new ambassador, following Kirsten Hillman’s planned departure, presents an opportunity for the Canadian government to reevaluate its U.S. trade approach.
Stating his readiness to contribute positively, Jivani emphasized his desire to engage with Vance to explore avenues for economic enhancement. However, he respects Carney’s leadership and is prepared to step in only if his involvement is deemed beneficial. Jivani highlighted the importance of strategic coordination, referencing the fallout from the “Doug Ford commercial debacle,” which led to the halt of trade discussions prompted by an Ontario advertisement featuring Ronald Reagan during the Major League Baseball playoffs.
Despite extending prior offers of assistance, Jivani refrains from inserting himself into discussions, emphasizing the necessity of a cohesive strategy. Reflecting on his advocacy initiatives ranging from challenging diversity, equity, and inclusion policies to organizing university tours focusing on issues affecting young men, Jivani has established a reputation within Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s caucus as a vocal and principled contributor. He aims to combat what he terms “Liberal racism” by addressing policy gaps that hinder employment opportunities for non-racialized Canadians.
Jivani’s diverse advocacy efforts may seem disparate on the surface, but he maintains that his motivation stems from a deep-seated commitment to addressing societal issues that require reevaluation. He stands against hate speech and discrimination, emphasizing the importance of fostering healthy dialogues on sensitive topics. Looking ahead to the upcoming Conservative convention in January, where Poilievre faces a mandatory leadership review post-electoral defeat, Jivani expresses confidence in a positive outcome, citing members’ previous overwhelming support for Poilievre’s leadership.
Reflecting on his election in a 2024 byelection and the subsequent electoral setback, Jivani acknowledges the challenges of being in the Opposition once more. However, he remains optimistic about the potential for collaboration between Conservative and Liberal MPs to drive positive change, citing instances of bipartisan support for legislative measures. Jivani commends Poilievre’s growth following the electoral loss, noting the transformative impact of engaging directly with voters and communities during the campaign.
