Marc Messier, a well-known individual in Quebec’s cultural realm, has passed away after a brief illness at the age of 78. His agency confirmed his death. Messier had a distinguished acting career, portraying memorable characters in movies, TV shows, and plays. One of Messier’s notable achievements was co-writing and performing in the play “Broue,” which he showcased over 3,000 times to more than 3,300,000 viewers over 35 years alongside his long-time collaborators Marcel Gauthier and Michel Côté. The play, originating in 1979, was a comedic portrayal of ordinary men sharing their woes over a beer at a local tavern.

Apart from his extensive theatrical accomplishments, Messier gained acclaim for his television roles, starting with his breakthrough performance in “Lance et compte.” He continued his success on television with his role as Réjean in “La Petite Vie.” Additionally, Messier made a lasting impression in the popular film series “Les Boys.”

Tributes honoring Marc Messier began flowing in on Tuesday, with Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette expressing deep sorrow over his passing. Fréchette praised Messier as an exceptional actor and artist who left an indelible mark on Quebec’s cultural landscape with his unforgettable characters in theater, cinema, and television.

Fréchette, recalling Messier’s talent for evoking laughter, emotion, and unity, emphasized that his legacy will endure in the memories of many. The Premier requested that the Quebec flag at the Parliament Building be flown at half-mast during Messier’s funeral. Prime Minister Mark Carney also extended condolences, recognizing Messier’s significant contributions to Quebec’s theatrical, television, and cinematic realms that impacted an entire generation.

Survived by his immediate family, including his three children, Marc Messier leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who loved his work.
