New York City voters have demonstrated significant interest and participation in the upcoming mayoral election scheduled for Tuesday. Over 735,000 votes were cast during the city’s nine-day early, in-person voting period, a substantial increase compared to the 2021 election, which was the only other mayoral race to offer early voting.
The race for New York City’s mayor always attracts national attention due to the city’s status as the largest in the United States and the financial hub of the country. Recent polls indicate a potential historic moment as the city is poised to elect its first Muslim mayor, a Democratic candidate, leading to U.S. President Donald Trump threatening to withhold federal funds from New York.
The three main contenders in the mayoral race are Zohran Mamdani representing the Democrats, Curtis Sliwa from the Republican party, and former New York governor Andrew Cuomo running as an Independent. Mamdani, a 34-year-old state assemblyman, secured victory over Cuomo in the Democratic primary, prompting Cuomo’s decision to run as an Independent.
Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, has centered his campaign on addressing the cost of living and enhancing affordability in the city through proposals such as tax increases on the wealthiest residents, corporate tax hikes, rent freezes for stabilized apartments, and an increase in publicly subsidized housing.
Cuomo, aged 67, seeks a political comeback after resigning as governor amidst allegations of sexual harassment four years ago. Presently, he is emphasizing his ability to combat Mamdani’s left-leaning policies and has pledged to bolster law enforcement and reduce crime rates if elected.
Sliwa, a 71-year-old activist, founder of the Guardian Angels organization, and former Republican mayoral candidate, is running on a platform focused on improving quality of life, particularly in the outer boroughs, and enhancing public safety. He positions himself as an anti-Trump Republican.
The current mayor, Adams, elected as a Democrat and planning to run as an Independent for re-election, withdrew from the race in September due to poor polling numbers. Despite his withdrawal, Adams’ name remains on the ballot.
Polls across New York City’s five boroughs are set to open at 6 a.m. ET and close at 9 p.m. ET. The election results are expected promptly, with recent polls indicating a tightening race between Mamdani and Cuomo, suggesting a potentially closely contested outcome.
Throughout the campaign, Trump has made several threats against Mamdani, including arrest and deportation, and indicated a reluctance to allocate federal funds to New York if Mamdani is elected. He has also advised against voting for Sliwa, emphasizing support for Cuomo to prevent a Mamdani victory.
The potential election of Mamdani has sparked mixed reactions within the Democratic Party, with some viewing him as a promising figure while others express concerns about potential Republican efforts to associate him with socialism, raising fears within the party.
