“Renowned Diamond Expert Honored with New Mineral”

Must read

Renowned diamond expert and scholar Graham Pearson, known for his extensive work in mantle geology and mineralogy, has been honored by having a newly-discovered mineral named after him. The mineral, Grahampearsonite, was found within a deep-Earth diamond in Brazil’s Juina region, crystallized at depths exceeding 300 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.

The chemical composition of Grahampearsonite consists of calcium, phosphorus, and oxygen. Initially recognized as a synthetic material, similar to calcium pyrophosphate used in toothpaste abrasive, it was identified naturally for the first time within the diamond. Through X-ray analysis, researchers observed the mineral’s unique crystal structure while it was still enclosed within the diamond.

Pearson, a leading figure in diamond research, has made significant contributions by shedding light on the Earth’s mantle history and developing innovative techniques for geochemical analysis. His dedication to studying minerals and diamonds continues at the University of Alberta, where he oversees the Arctic Resources Geochemistry Laboratory.

Expressing humility and gratitude for the mineral named in his honor, Pearson emphasized the importance of ongoing mineral discoveries, highlighting their potential applications and significance in understanding Earth’s geological processes. With advancements in technology, the identification and exploration of new minerals are progressing, with thousands more waiting to be unearthed to reveal the Earth’s hidden treasures.
