Two individuals lost their lives and 13 others were wounded in Kyiv following the bombardment of Ukrainian sites by Russian missiles and drones overnight, according to Ukrainian authorities on Saturday. The assault in Kyiv resulted in multiple fires and inflicted damage on residential structures, including a kindergarten, as confirmed by city officials. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko expressed that these attacks specifically targeted civilian and energy facilities, accusing Russia of aiming to create a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine during the winter season.

Furthermore, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha revealed that Russian missiles and drones also struck the energy grid, railways, and residences in Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Sumy. The Russian Defence Ministry justified the overnight attacks as directed at Ukraine’s military-industrial complex enterprises and energy infrastructure facilities supporting its operations. Separately, they claimed to have intercepted 121 Ukrainian drones, including seven heading towards Moscow.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity of Patriot air defense systems to safeguard Ukrainian cities from continuous Russian aggressions, following the visible smoke clouds over Kyiv on Saturday morning, with firefighters actively extinguishing fires in the city. Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of deploying Patriot systems to counter the frequent missile and drone attacks from Russia, urging partners with relevant capabilities to implement discussed strategies.

The effectiveness of Patriot systems in neutralizing Russian ballistic missiles was underscored, with Ukraine currently in negotiations to acquire 25 Patriot air defense systems from the U.S. Zelenskyy called on America, Europe, and G7 nations to support efforts in preventing such life-threatening attacks. Ukraine’s air force reported successfully intercepting several missiles and drones launched in the overnight assaults, with multiple hits recorded across the country.
