Sipekne’katik First Nation has once again criticized the provincial government, declaring that Premier Tim Houston and two cabinet ministers are not permitted on reserve lands. Chief Michelle Glasgow and the band council have issued a resolution banning Premier Houston, Justice Minister Scott Armstrong, and L’nu Affairs Minister Leah Martin as “undesirables” from band property. Breaking this ban could result in a $50,000 fine, according to the statement.
Glasgow stated that Premier Houston has lost credibility, is ill-informed on L’nu Affairs, and is violating constitutionally protected Mi’kmaw rights. She emphasized that this ban is for both the protection of the community and the banned officials. In response, the premier’s office highlighted that they take safety threats seriously.
Houston, addressing the issue, expressed surprise at the ban and emphasized the importance of focusing on the safety of Nova Scotians. The ban follows recent directives from Armstrong to crack down on illegal cannabis dispensaries, a move criticized by Mi’kmaw chiefs as a targeted attack. Houston defended the directive as a measure to combat organized crime and safeguard public health.
Glasgow criticized Houston for not visiting the First Nation or building relationships with its leaders since taking office. She accused Houston of perpetuating colonial practices and criticized Armstrong and Martin for their roles in the government. The strained relationship between Houston and the First Nations community has escalated due to perceived lack of consultation on natural resource development and legislation affecting Mi’kmaw land protectors.
