“Toronto Urged to Prioritize Flu Vaccinations Amid Rising Cases”

Must read

Toronto’s chief medical officer is urging the public to prioritize flu vaccinations as there has been an early increase in flu cases among youths and the unfortunate passing of three children in eastern Ontario this month. Dr. Michelle Murti highlighted the significant rise in flu activity, particularly affecting children, fueled by influenza A. She emphasized the seriousness of the current season, noting an elevated number of pediatric cases requiring hospitalization, with influenza A also impacting adults and individuals in long-term care.

In eastern Ontario, it was reported that three children aged between five and nine lost their lives due to flu-related complications this month. While Toronto has not documented any flu-related child fatalities this season, Dr. Murti extended condolences on behalf of Toronto Public Health to the bereaved families. Stressing the importance of protective measures, she encouraged the community to utilize all available precautions, including flu vaccination, regular hand hygiene, staying home when unwell, and wearing masks in crowded indoor settings, especially with the holiday season approaching.

Flu vaccines are readily accessible and free for individuals aged six months and above in Ontario at participating pharmacies and primary care facilities. Dr. Murti also advised individuals to consider getting their COVID-19 vaccination concurrently for added protection.
