The Congressional Budget Office has released a new analysis revealing that President Donald Trump’s proposal to establish a space-based weapons system, known as the “Golden Dome for America” missile defense program, is expected to incur a total cost of $1.2 trillion over a 20-year span. This figure significantly surpasses the initial projection of $175 billion declared by the President last year. Trump’s executive order, issued during the early stages of his current presidential term, mandated the development of this cutting-edge defense system, aiming for full operational readiness before the conclusion of his term in January 2029.
The CBO report, published on Tuesday, outlines an illustrative approach rather than a precise estimate of the administration’s proposal due to the limited specifics provided by the U.S. Defense Department regarding the nature and quantity of systems to be deployed within the Golden Dome framework. The absence of detailed information has rendered it challenging to accurately forecast the long-term expenses associated with the initiative.
Inspired in part by Israel’s successful multi-layered defense mechanisms, such as the renowned “Iron Dome,” the U.S. Golden Dome project aims to integrate ground and space-based technologies capable of detecting, intercepting, and neutralizing missiles at various stages of a potential attack. Notably, Congress has already allocated approximately $24 billion towards this missile defense effort as part of a comprehensive tax and spending package endorsed by Republicans last year.
Gen. Michael A. Guetlein, overseeing the Golden Dome project, emphasized during a recent testimony that the initiative is dedicated to maintaining cost-effectiveness, refuting claims that the estimated costs were inflated. In response to the CBO’s evaluation, Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, a Democrat, criticized the missile defense venture as a burdensome expenditure funded primarily by American workers and benefiting defense contractors.
President Trump’s initial cost projection of $175 billion for the Golden Dome has been eclipsed by the CBO’s latest assessment, indicating that the space-based components alone could reach up to $542 billion over the next two decades. This exponential increase in projected costs underscores the complexity and financial implications of implementing such an ambitious defense system.
