“Tumbler Ridge Community Grapples with Return to School After Tragic Shooting”

Must read

In Tumbler Ridge, B.C., families affected by the recent tragic shooting are grappling with the decision of returning to school as temporary classrooms open today for students and staff. Nicole Noksana, the Chair of the Tumbler Ridge Parents Advisory Council, revealed that the community is still reeling from the aftermath of the shooting that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including six children and an education assistant.

The small town is tightly-knit, making the grieving process particularly challenging for residents who are attending funerals, supporting bereaved families, and facing significant changes in their households. To assist the victims’ families, the parent council initiated a fund and has been advocating for the students’ needs during the transition back to school.

Noksana emphasized the financial burdens families are facing, such as travel expenses, funeral attire, and housing costs. While some in Tumbler Ridge are eager to resume normalcy through school routines, there is also prevalent fear and uncertainty among students and families.

Questions regarding safety measures, security systems, and lockdown protocols remain unanswered, prompting Noksana to advocate for clarifications before students re-enter the school premises. The Ministry of Education and Child Care has planned a phased return for students, offering in-person, online, or hybrid learning options.

Temporary classrooms will have security personnel to ensure safety, and the gradual return aims to support both students and staff based on their readiness. Trauma recovery sessions and staff orientation at the new facilities are part of the plan to facilitate a smooth transition back to learning.

Chad Anderson, the School District 59 chair, emphasized the importance of providing a comfortable and secure learning environment for returning students and families. The District of Tumbler Ridge emphasized privacy and dignity for those affected, with continued mental health support services at the Tumbler Ridge Health Centre.

Noksana and her children plan to visit the temporary classrooms to make an informed decision about returning to school, emphasizing the importance of allowing teachers and students adequate time to heal before resuming normal activities.
