Newfoundland residents found amusement on Monday as international media coverage mistakenly portrayed passengers on a British Airways flight diverted to St. John’s as stranded on a frozen island in Canada. The labeling of Newfoundland as a “freezing island” sparked humor and weather-related discussions on social platforms. A Reddit video parody garnered attention for humorously depicting passengers stranded in St. John’s scavenging for necessities in a David Attenborough-style narrative.
Despite the comical reactions, the situation was challenging for the 255 passengers grounded in St. John’s for two nights due to a medical emergency on their flight to Houston. Heather McKinnon, the general manager of the Delta Hotel, shared that passengers faced difficulties without access to their luggage during a sudden storm. Some travelers even mentioned missing important events like funerals and weddings.
McKinnon emphasized that Newfoundland is not the icy wilderness implied by the headlines, highlighting the warm hospitality offered to the stranded passengers. The Delta Hotel accommodated around 110 passengers on the first night and all 255 on the following night. Staff members extended their efforts, providing buffet meals in conference rooms and assisting passengers with essential shopping needs, including diapers.
While British Airways did not clarify why luggage access was restricted, they covered the expenses for the passengers’ extended stay in St. John’s. International media coverage, such as the BBC, sensationalized the delay by characterizing Newfoundland as a frozen island. Contrary to this depiction, historical data shows that April temperatures in St. John’s are typically above freezing, with the city being warmer in January than Montreal or Toronto on average.
The Delta Hotel shared a positive review from a passenger on social media, emphasizing the care and support provided despite the misleading portrayals in the media. The incident shed light on the hospitality and resilience of Newfoundlanders in challenging circumstances.
