“BC Premier Meets with PM and Alberta Premier on Oil Pipeline”

Must read

British Columbia’s Premier David Eby recently met with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to discuss the proposed oil pipeline to the West Coast. Eby described the meeting as cordial but noted that there were no significant updates on the project. Carney and Smith had previously signed a memorandum of understanding outlining a potential path for the pipeline, emphasizing the need for a private proponent and the full partnership of Alberta and B.C. First Nations.

Despite the agreement between Carney and Smith, Eby and some Indigenous communities in B.C. have expressed concerns about the project. Eby confirmed that there was no indication of a private proponent or support from affected Indigenous groups during the meeting.

While Eby found the meeting to be productive overall, he highlighted his concerns about potential distractions from existing projects with private backers and Indigenous support. Smith echoed Eby’s sentiments, calling the meeting productive and expressing a commitment to keeping Eby informed of developments.

Although the pipeline proposal is still in the development stage, Carney remains steadfast in his belief that the project will proceed. Eby reiterated that the project appears to be primarily driven by Alberta and the Prime Minister.

Smith intends to present a proposal to the federal Major Projects Office later this year, aiming to attract a private proponent and secure buy-in from First Nations groups. Other premiers, including Saskatchewan’s Scott Moe and Nova Scotia’s Tim Houston, have voiced support for the pipeline. Eby emphasized that his focus remains on other pressing issues until Alberta advances its proposal.

All Canadian premiers are currently in Ottawa for upcoming trade discussions with the U.S. and Mexico as they review the North American trade pact.
