Ford Urges Canada to Resist Trump’s Bridge Threats

Must read

Ontario’s leader urges Canadians and the prime minister not to yield to Donald Trump’s threats regarding the Gordie Howe bridge opening. Doug Ford emphasized the need to stand firm against President Trump’s actions during his address on Tuesday, questioning the sudden urgency in expediting the bridge project in 2017. Ford dismissed Trump’s claim of minimal U.S. content in the bridge, highlighting the significant American contribution to the construction.

The Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority confirmed that the Gordie Howe International Bridge is set to open in early 2026 and emphasized the economic benefits it will bring to North America. The project, jointly owned by Canada and Michigan, aims to spur investment, create jobs, and foster business and tourism opportunities.

The idea for a new bridge in southwestern Ontario originated in the early 2000s, culminating in a Canada-Michigan agreement in 2012. Construction began six years later, with Canadian taxpayers funding the $6.4 billion project, to be recouped through toll revenue sharing with Michigan. The bridge, located west of existing crossings, will divert traffic away from congested areas, linking Highway 401 and I-75 in Michigan directly.

The opening of the Gordie Howe bridge has faced delays, with the latest postponement pushing the launch from fall 2025 to early 2026. Former Michigan Governor and U.S. Ambassador to Canada, James Blanchard, denounced Trump’s threats as baseless and detrimental to the crucial U.S.-Canada connection. A union representing laborers on the bridge condemned Trump’s remarks as divisive and emphasized the bridge’s role in enhancing cross-border trade and economic cooperation.

Plans for an opening celebration in late March or early April are in place, showcasing the bridge’s significance as a vital economic and social link between the two nations. The ongoing dispute between Trump and Canadian officials over the bridge’s construction and operation underscores the importance of maintaining strong cross-border relations.
