Expressing his emotions, Markovic shared, “Man, I still have trouble explaining [it]. The word that keeps coming back to my mind is unreal — the emotions I’ve felt the past week.” The 21-year-old, hailing from Gatineau, Quebec, joins Cyle Larin as the only Canadians to achieve the top spot in the MLS draft, with Larin’s successful transition from MLS rookie of the year to Europe serving as inspiration.
D.C. United’s managing director of soccer operation, Erkut Sogut, highlighted Markovic’s attributes both on and off the field, emphasizing the importance of his winning mentality and warrior-like playing style to the team’s culture. Sogut believes that Markovic is ready to make an immediate impact on the first team.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Markovic eagerly anticipates facing off against top-tier players like Lionel Messi when D.C. United takes on Inter Miami on March 7 at M&T Bank Stadium.
