“Canadian Defender Nikola Markovic Goes First Overall in MLS Draft”

Must read

A tumultuous week concluded on a positive note for Canadian defender Nikola Markovic as he was selected first overall by D.C. United in the MLS SuperDraft. Despite a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in the College Cup championship game earlier in the week, Markovic’s draft to D.C. United brought a wave of relief and excitement.

Expressing his emotions, Markovic shared, “Man, I still have trouble explaining [it]. The word that keeps coming back to my mind is unreal — the emotions I’ve felt the past week.” The 21-year-old, hailing from Gatineau, Quebec, joins Cyle Larin as the only Canadians to achieve the top spot in the MLS draft, with Larin’s successful transition from MLS rookie of the year to Europe serving as inspiration.

D.C. United’s managing director of soccer operation, Erkut Sogut, highlighted Markovic’s attributes both on and off the field, emphasizing the importance of his winning mentality and warrior-like playing style to the team’s culture. Sogut believes that Markovic is ready to make an immediate impact on the first team.

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Markovic eagerly anticipates facing off against top-tier players like Lionel Messi when D.C. United takes on Inter Miami on March 7 at M&T Bank Stadium. The team’s performance is crucial after finishing at the bottom of the league standings, with a pressing need for defensive reinforcements.

Markovic, named the ACC defensive player of the year, signed a Generation Adidas contract with the league, enhancing his appeal to teams due to the contract’s salary cap benefits. Other notable draft picks included Ricky Louis and Nicholas Simmonds going to FC Dallas, and Zach Ramsey joining the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Furthermore, Canadian talent Nikos Clarke-Tosczak and Daniel Lugo secured spots with Sporting Kansas City and the Vancouver Whitecaps, respectively, in the MLS draft. While Toronto FC and CF Montreal did not have first-round selections, the draft saw several promising young players find their new homes in the league.
