Phones were buzzing incessantly in southern Manitoba on Tuesday night with tornado alerts, even though the threat was distant for many receiving the alerts. Numerous individuals reported receiving over 20 alerts throughout the evening via social media posts. Two tornadoes have been confirmed to the south of Winnipeg, with Environment and Climate Change Canada investigating the potential development of additional tornadoes in the region.
Tyler Samagalski, who was at a bar in East Selkirk on Tuesday night, mentioned that he and others at the bar eventually started ignoring the repeated warning alerts on their phones as there was no sign of an approaching tornado. The alerts indicated tornadoes in the “mobile coverage area,” meaning all devices connected to a cellphone tower in the affected region received the alert, resulting in people in Winnipeg receiving warnings about a possible tornado in Niverville, over 30 kilometers away.
Environment Canada is conducting an investigation to understand why some individuals received the same alerts multiple times and has hinted at a forthcoming targeted warning system for thunderstorms and tornadoes. This new system, similar to those used in the United States, will only notify individuals if they are in the path of a storm, a change deemed necessary by forecaster Justin Oertel due to warning fatigue among Canadians.
Concerns have been raised that excessive warnings may lead to complacency in the event of a real emergency. Some residents, like Jason Emmers from East Selkirk, received around 20 tornado warning notifications on Tuesday night. While Emmers appreciates the alerts, he believes a more focused approach is needed to prevent panic or desensitization due to the high volume of notifications.
Emmers highlighted the delay in receiving a tailored warning from their municipality compared to the alerts on his phone, emphasizing the need for more specific and location-based alerts. Worries about the impact on children with anxiety and the desire for detailed tornado sightings information were also expressed on social media.
