Former U.S. president Barack Obama has assembled a lineup of top-tier artists for the inauguration of his new cultural hub.
Among the performers set to grace the stage at the grand opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s South Side are Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Bono and the Edge from U2, Eddie Vedder, and Bruce Springsteen.
The live-streamed event for the center, which includes a museum, library, and sports arena with an NBA-standard court, is scheduled for June 18 at noon ET, a day prior to its public opening on the U.S. holiday of Juneteenth.
President Donald Trump is unlikely to attend, having previously criticized the center as “Obama’s belated and excessively over-budget ‘library’.”
Trump has been focusing on the Freedom 250 initiative this summer to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, including hosting a Freedom 250 UFC event at the White House on his 80th birthday. At the event, fighter Josh Hokit made derogatory remarks about Michelle Obama.
Critics have accused Trump of using official events to promote his political image, particularly by rebranding celebrations under the Freedom 250 banner, bypassing the bipartisan America 250 committee established to commemorate the milestone.
Several artists have withdrawn from anniversary events linked to Trump, like the Great American State Fair, leading to a reshuffling of performers. Notably, Bret Michaels, the Commodores, Fab Morvan, Young MC, and Martina McBride canceled their appearances.
Michaels explained on Instagram that the event had evolved into a divisive platform contrary to its initial description.
The remaining performers for the event now include Flo Rida and Vanilla Ice, after others pulled out. Trump suggested canceling the original concept and announced a rally on the National Mall instead.
Meanwhile, America 250 is proceeding with its festivities, such as the America’s Block Party concert on July 4, featuring the Smashing Pumpkins, Queen Latifah, and Chris Stapleton.
The Obama center’s opening follows a federal court order for the removal of Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center facade, a move initiated after Trump took control in 2025 and added his name to the building.
Clodagh Harrington, an expert in American history, noted the contrasting events as a potential competition for attention, highlighting the cultural significance of the Obamas over the Trumps.
Regarding the Obama center’s design and functionality, critics have raised concerns about its aesthetics and lack of a National Archives and Records Administration facility on-site.
The center’s 20-acre campus is poised to attract around 1 million visitors annually, offering amenities like a public library branch, an NBA-grade basketball court, a garden, and a playground.
