Moving day turned into a surprising cut-down day for numerous teams at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Four out of the five available spots were clinched on Wednesday, with wins from Canada’s Kerri Einarson, Manitoba’s Beth Peterson, Nova Scotia’s Christina Black, and Alberta’s Selena Sturmay at Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga, Ont.
Einarson secured her place in the Pool A playoffs with a 13-2 victory over Nicky Kaufman of the Northwest Territories in the morning session, joining the undefeated Kaitlyn Lawes of Manitoba in the playoff mix.
Meanwhile, Peterson, Black, and Sturmay all emerged victorious in the afternoon, solidifying their positions in Pool B. Peterson defeated Alberta’s Kayla Skrlik 8-4, Black overcame Prince Edward Island’s Amanda Power 6-3, and Sturmay bested Newfoundland and Labrador’s Mackenzie Mitchell 11-6.
With one spot in Pool A still up for grabs, teams were gearing up for further games on Thursday to vie for optimal seeding in the playoffs.
Einarson, currently in second place in Pool A with a 6-1 record, showcased a strong performance in her match, scoring four points in the second end and maintaining the lead throughout the game.
The playoff picture was taking shape, with Peterson leading Pool B at 6-0, followed by Black at 6-1 and Sturmay at 5-1. Skrlik slipped to a fourth-place tie with Northern Ontario’s Krista Scharf at 3-3.
In other early matches, Nova Scotia’s Taylour Stevens narrowly defeated British Columbia’s Taylor Reese-Hansen 11-10 in an extra end, while Saskatchewan’s Jolene Campbell secured a 10-4 victory over Yukon’s Bayly Scoffin.
The battle for the remaining playoff spot in Pool A intensified as Stevens and Ontario’s Hailey Armstrong entered Thursday with 5-2 records. Stevens triumphed over Scoffin 9-2, and Armstrong outplayed Campbell 8-4 in the evening session.
As the competition heated up, the playoffs were on the horizon, with teams strategizing for the next rounds to secure their path to the finals and potentially represent Canada at the world women’s curling championship in March.
